'This year Mumbai experienced all sorts of emotions'
Times of India - Mumbai 31 Dec 2005
How would you sum up the year 2005 for Mumbai?
This year, Mumbai experienced all sorts of emotions ranging from chaos due to the monsoons to increased activism on behalf of the city. 2005 was an important year in creating awareness about Mumbai's problems with the state and center.
What are the lessons learnt this year following the deluge?
That the local machinery must be more vigilant, responsive and prepared for such a disaster in the future.
What about the urban renewal programme that you raised in the Parliament?
We must have an urban renewal mission that should look into urbanisation in all cities in India and subsequently the Prime Minister recently launched the Jawaharlal Nehru urban renewal mission with the aim of funding state governments subject to certain reforms.
What do you hope to see in the following year as far as Mumbai is concerned?
I hope there's improved co-ordination among agencies working in the city and directly elected Mayor.
